Hello Dollers (and non Dollers)
If you didn't know Lyricanna is the current GM for digital dolls.
All Digital Dolls Daily Deviation suggestions come through her now, as well as any queries you might have about the gallery. This article will be updated by the current GM as changes to the gallery are made.
This Article is to help Dollers understand which category in which to place their work as it is fairly confusing with all the terms we use for a newer or even an older doller to understand where the right place to put their work is.
Hope this is helpful to you all!
Original Adopted and Base
Original Base
This is for dolls you have created on a base you have made yourself. i.e you created both the base and the doll so the work is 100% yours.
Adopted Base
This is for dolls you have made on bases made by other people, ergo you have adopted the base.
If you post a doll in this section you must credit your basemaker according to their terms, though it is preferable if you create clickable links to the sites so other people who might wish to use the base can get there.
Bases
This section is for doll bases you intend for other people to use to create dolls. You may wish to specify terms and conditions for the usage of your bases in the comments.
Do not submit your dolls here, they will be moved into the apropriate category.
Types of Shading
Pixel
Dolls in this section should be made entirely pixel by pixel, with the exception of the flood fill tool. Backgrounds, if any, should also be created pixel by pixel or should be a flat colour. Graditent, Photo and Texture backgrounds are not created pixel by pixel therefor rendering your doll not entirely pixel art. Pixel is also often created with a limited colour count.
Tool
Dolls created in programmes such as Gimp or Photoshop using automated anti alias techniques such as brushes from photoshop and the smudge or blur tool. Dodge and Burn tools may also feature. Colour count is not an issue and often these dolls are saved in .png format to preserve all the colours. tool dolls can often look like miniature CG paintings.
Misc
This is a somewhat hard section to define as it falls somewhere between pixelling and tooling.
This is where dolls/bases with no shading at all or limited cell type shading where no pixel technique have been used should be placed. Also pixel dolls places on gradient/photo/texture background belong here and dolls with computer generated text as part of the piece itself. Dolls with perhaps pixelled clothing and tooled hair may also belong here as they are neither entirely tooling nor entirely pixelled.
Notes about Pixel Dolls/Bases and Text
Any bases created pixel by pixel but include text in the form of terms of use are allowed to remain in the pixel category. The text is not part of the actual piece of pixel art (the base) and will not be classified as such, though basemakers are encouraged to use pixel type fonts to write their terms of use instead of fancy computer anti aliased fonts.
In terms of dolls, pixel dolls created with computer generated text as part of the piece belong in the misc section as the text was computer generated not hand pixeled. This includes adding the name of a character, or a note to someone, or a Happy Holiday text.
Some Examples
I went through my gallery to pick out a few examples to clarify the points made above.
Pixel Art > Original Base
This doll was made pixel by pixel on a base I created
Tooled > Adopted Base
This doll was made using photoshop brushes and filters on a base by DHF
Pixel Art > Base
A base I created intended for myself an others to use to make dolls. The text upon the base is not part of the base itself, rather a reminder to the user of who made it, so it may remain in the pixel art section.
Miscellaneous > Original Base
This doll was made pixel by pixel on a base I created, however I added computer generated text, so I placed the doll in Miscellaneous. An argument could be made that I could have pixelled it by hand, but I know inside that I didn't, so I placed the doll in the right category. Have integrity where your work is concerned. Misc is not a bad category and shouldn't be avoided becaus it's not a 'specific' category.
DollMakers and Dress Up Games
I know these are darned good fun, but unfortunately the only place you can submit them is scraps because although you have placed the objects you haven't made them.
FAQ #502: Can I submit things which I made using different "games" like a doll maker or with other character generators?
Hope this has been helpful to dollers both old and new

Things you wish...
...that your younger art self knew. Is there anything you've learned as you grew older, that seems really obvious now, that you wish that you had learned way earlier? Or are there any things your younger art self stubbornly thought was correct and you've later learned was different? For me it's having learned to "really look" at things. I use other people's art all the time to solve issues I'm having. Not by copying them of course! But by looking at the work of people better than me and reaaaallly learning from it beyond style and anatomy. Also references. Drawing from memory does not win you art points.
Still Here!
Hey! It's been a while! I had a bit of a shitty mental health year last year (I'm ok) and one of my self care items was to abruptly stop using some of my social media due to just having too many things to look after. However I've sorted myself out, hopefully got my brain back on as straight as it ever was, and I decided to log back in for the first time in... goodness knows how long! Everything looks different, I'm so lost, it was still desaturated green last time I was here! I hope to upload some of my latest work soon, if you haven't been following me on other socials that might mean lots of new work for you to check out. If you're still around, thanks for sticking with me!
Do you like moths? And Pins? of course you do.
One day left for guarenteed preorder of my moth pin, once I place the order I will have a finite number of pins in my stocks.
It's likely to be a limited run and not restocked so do place an order if you want one!

Hello Again
Hey guys!! Long time no see!!
I'm not as active on deviantART as I used to be, though I'm trying to remember to log in and post some stuff.
I had a couple of bad experiences posting some work and people choosing to attack me over it's content, and while that's not the majority of people who talk to me it did cause me to take a step or two back from here to regroup myself.
If you want to keep up with my work you can also find me at the following places, where i often post a lot of sketches and other fun stuff too.

This may not be the best place to ask, but it seems to be closest in topic to my question: If I use, say, the curve tool in MSPaint, (which isn't hand-laying each individual pixel), where should the image be categorized?
